How to Know When It’s Time to Update Your WPS Library

Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) are not just paperwork — they’re the foundation of a compliant and efficient welding operation. Whether you’re a structural steel fabricator, contractor, or quality manager, it’s critical that your WPS library stays current with code changes, material updates, and project-specific requirements.

At ProArc Consulting, we work with contractors and fabrication shops across the country who think they’re covered… until a DOT inspector, AWS CWI, or general contractor tells them otherwise. So how do you know when it’s time to review and update your WPSs? Let’s break it down.

🚩 Signs You Need to Update Your WPS Library

  1. It’s Been Over a Year Since You Last Reviewed It
Codes change. Job specs evolve. If your WPSs haven’t been touched in 12 months or more, you’re likely out of sync with something — whether it’s filler metal specs, preheat temps, or joint design tolerances.
  2. You’re Working on DOT, D1.5, or Other Code-Sensitive Jobs
Many state or DOT projects require documented procedures that match very specific joint details (like Figure 7.1 from AWS D1.5-2025). If you’re using a “one-size-fits-all” WPS, you could be setting yourself up for failure before the first arc is struck.
  3. You’ve Added New Welders or Changed Processes
If your crew has grown or you’ve switched from SMAW to FCAW (or vice versa), you need to verify your procedures match what’s actually being done in the field — and that your welders are properly qualified under that procedure.
  4. You’re Getting Rejected During Inspections
If a CWI has ever circled a weld and asked for your WPS — and you couldn’t back it up with a qualified doc — you know that feeling. Rejection happens when paperwork doesn’t support the weld. A good WPS prevents that.
  5. You’ve Upgraded Equipment or Changed Base Metals
New machines? New filler metals? Working on galvanized, high-strength, or exotic material? Every change in the welding environment might mean your WPSs need to be revised or requalified.

🔍 What Happens If You Don’t?

The risk is bigger than just a slap on the wrist. Outdated or missing WPS documentation can lead to:

  • Failed inspections
  • Lost project approvals
  • Rework and costly delays
  • Loss of client trust

Worst case? A structural failure or legal issue tied to noncompliant welding procedures. It’s just not worth the risk.

🛠️ What We Do at ProArc Consulting

At ProArc Consulting, we help contractors and fabricators:

  • Write new WPSs from scratch (prequalified or tested)
  • Update and revise existing welding procedures
  • Build full WPS/WPQR libraries organized by process and material
  • Provide compliance support for AWS D1.1, D1.5, DOT, and AISC-related projects

We’re not just paper-pushers — we’re CWIs who’ve been in the field. We speak your language and write procedures that match the work your welders are doing.
